Dewoitine D.520

The most modern French fighter of World War II, the Dewoitine D.520 was designed and built in 1938 by the Société nationale des constructions aéronautiques du Midi aircraft manufacturer. The Dewoitine D.520 was a single-seat, low-wing fighter with an all-metal construction. It was mass-produced from March 1939. Production continued even after France’s capitulation in 1940. Subsequent examples were built for the Vichy government, the Luftwaffe, and the Italian, Bulgarian, and Romanian armies. Polish pilots defending France were equipped with 26 of this type during the German invasion in 1940. A total of approximately 755 fighters were produced. The design proved so good that the aircraft remained in service after the war until 1953.
